Course Description:
Prerequisites: Art I, II, and III (511, 512, 513/513M)
Art IV (12) is an elective Certificate of Merit course which encourages students to explore individual interests and ideas in a studio atmosphere. Through a variety of media, students will develop the potential to interpret and utilize aesthetic aspects in works of art. Emphasis will be placed upon analysis of the elements and principles of design. This course will synthesize artistic knowledge, production skills, and criticism to develop a high level of artistic understanding.

Art Room Rules:
All rules outlined in the Fort Hill High School Policy and Procedure (Handbook) book are also to be applied and followed in the Art Room.
The class rules have been set up so that each student has the opportunity to work in an educational environment where learning can take place and task be completed. No individual student or situation will be permitted to interfere with instruction or the learning environment.
Each student will:
receive a utility pass in order to leave the room.
6. Turn in projects and assignments on time.
7. Use of iPods and cell phones in the art room is allowed (if used in a responsible manner). Ipods and cell phones
are only allowed on during work time.
Course Overview:
1. The student will identify, describe, and interpret qualities of form that affect visual perception and response.
2. The student will select works of art and interpret their meaning based on the application of expressive characteristics and use of symbolism.
3. The student will defend decisions about why works of art, natural phenomena, or objects in the built environment are visually effective or not and identify references or other resource materials that support conclusions.
4. The student will propose ways that the visual arts reflect significant historical, cultural, and social issues by summarizing and presenting conclusions based on analysis of works of art and other sources of information.
5. The student will determine factors that influenced the creation of art in specific historical eras and places by studying artwork and other sources of information.
6. The student will compare relationships between the choices artists make and the contexts in which they work.
7. The student will classify relationships among the visual arts, and other disciplines, including structures, theoretical and aesthetic assumptions, and historical development.
8. The student will demonstrate competent application of the skills, knowledge, and attitudes required to produce works of art in a variety of media.
9. The student will demonstrate the ability to create compositions using the organizing concepts of the visual arts and a variety of materials, techniques, and processes.
10. The student will apply knowledge of aesthetic traditions and conventions to evaluate artwork from various sources.
11. The student will examine and refine a personal set of criteria for judging works of art and the visual environment.
