Course Description:
Art I (9-12) is an elective course designed to provide an initial high school art experience. Students will become aware of natural and man-made art forms in their environment as well as explore cultural and historical artistic heritage. Students will learn to use the elements and principles of design by incorporating various tools and techniques in the production of works. Skills developed in Art I can enrich leisure time or lead to advanced study.

All rules outlined in the Fort Hill High School Policy and Procedure (Handbook) book are also to be applied and followed in the Art Room.
The class rules have been set up so that each student has the opportunity to work in an educational environment where learning can take place and task be completed. No individual student or situation will be permitted to interfere with instruction or the learning environment.

Course Overview:
During the course of Art I, students will:
Some of the art materials that will be introduced in Art I include: tempera and watercolor paint, oil pastel, chalk pastel, colored pencil, clay, watercolor pencil, plaster, and acrylic paint. Students will be expected to complete one sketchbook assignment per week and keep the sketch in their sketchbook. Sketchbook assignments are a large part of Art I. Sketchbook assignments are typically completed in class on Mondays and are graded on Fridays. In class projects are completed in class the remainder of the week. In addition to sketchbook assignments and in class projects, students are required to come to class on time and to stay in their seat and participate in class. Students will earn 2 points for every day they come to class on time and participate. Art I is more of an introduction to various art media and ideas than a mastery of art media and ideas.
